It all started with the extraordinary night of controversy over the upset on American Idol, a fan favorite Pia Toscano fell despite her consistently high volume of positive sentiment over the past weeks.

yap.TV launched yap.TV Pulse the day this controversy broke, which measures what fans are saying on Twitter and on yap.TV before, during, and after the performance and results shows (free download on the App store here!).

We noticed the numbers were simply off the charts for this week, and highly contrasted with the actual results. Pia scored consistently high with fans, and our data showed Pia came out on top with fans after the performances on Wednesday night. We, and other fans out there, expected Pia to continue.

The Los Angeles Times wrote up a piece on this huge upset and cited yap.TV as the social TV app source of choice for reporting on what social TV fans thought about this, and the sentiment across all sources are unanimous – it is preposterous!

In the chart below, you can see the Tweet volume over the past 4 weeks that depicts how contestants were being discussed on Twitter and on the yap.TV social TV guide. Other than an expected blip when Casey Abrams was voted off, the data is fairly consistent and normal, until we hit Wednesday April 6th, then an eruption hits the social TV audience.

yap.TV enables fans to mingle around American Idol and all TV shows through the first social TV guide, which you can download for free on the App Store for all IOS devices and jump in and join the interactive TV experience!
